How to buy your orange t-shirt
Beginning July 18, UVic Bookstore will take departmental pre-orders for this year’s OSD t-shirts in support of Orange Shirt Day, which coincides with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. On this day, we wear orange to honor the Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools, those who did not return home, and those who are still feeling the lasting effects on our families, friends and communities. communities. Orange t-shirts can be purchased for $25.00 + tax.
The artwork on the orange shirts is titled “Heart and hands”, created by Carey Newman Hayalthkin’geme (Kwakwaka’wakw/Coast Salish).
“This design was made to honor the children who died in residential schools. The hearts express love for all those in unmarked graves and compassion for the families and communities who waited for them to be found. The colorful little hands remind us of the uniqueness and beauty of every child. Taken together, they represent our commitment to listen to our hearts and use our hands, to do the work that needs to be done.
The visceral confirmation of survivor accounts that came from locating these graves affected many of us emotionally. It changed the way many people think and feel about our current stories and realities in Canada. – C. Newman
