How often should you REALLY wash your clothes, from T-shirts to pajamas (and you probably aren’t doing it enough)
From learning to wash our hair again to remembering the ABCs of caring for your delicate vulva, this year has given us a lot of practical advice.
While the inevitable process of washing our clothes is a daily task that we are confident we have mastered over the years, there is apparently also a correct way.
Do you wash your clothes after each use?
Or are they all sitting on that one chair?
A new TikTok video has revealed how often you need to wash everything from t-shirts to sleepwear while making sure it’s done in a sustainable manner (a single wash can use up to 15-45 gallons of water. ).

The @ brightly.eco video, which has since gone viral with over 1.6 million likes, is based on a research project by Annie Gonzalez, a board-certified dermatologist.
According to her, not washing our clothes frequently enough can lead to a variety of nasty skin conditions, such as bacteria or an itchy rash.
âOur skin reabsorbs all the oil in our clothes, and the oil clogs the pores and causes acne on the body,â says Dr. Gonzalez.
This leads to the ultimate question: how often to wash clothes to ward off bacteria while saving the planet?
If you work from home, you can probably wear the same clothes for four days – unless, of course, you’re sweating a lot.
Items, such as socks and underwear, that come in very direct contact with your skin, the dermatologist suggests washing them more frequently.
The only exception here are bras – they should only be washed after wearing them up to four times.
Other everyday clothes can be put in the washing machine after their second or third wear.
These include dresses, shorts and pants.
The same goes for sleepwear – Gonzalez recommends washing our pajamas after their third use.
However, there were a few viewers who seemed to disagree with his suggestions, with one comment: ‘Lol, I only wear everything once!’
Someone wrote: ” Sleepwear, 8 1/2 months ”, adding: ” Everything else 1. ”
“Sleepwear until they don’t hold any more,” corrected a colleague at TikToker.
“ T shirts 2 to 4 door? ”
“It’s a cold life you all live, mine can barely go a day without getting all sweaty!”
