Bond’s perfectly cut polo shirt is a timeless and coveted classic
There is a scene in the 2006 smash 007 Casino Royale – Daniel Craig’s first round in the ultra-spy hot seat – in which Bond is seen wearing a midnight blue polo shirt for an afternoon chat in the Bahamas with M de Judi Dench. According to the film’s Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming, Craig’s short-sleeved Sunspel tailoring was an attempt to “show off his physique.” She succeeded.
Perfectly cut and extremely flattering, the shirt was crafted from ultra-light warp-knitted cotton and inspired by Sunspel’s very first polo shirt – originally invented by Peter Hill, then owner of the 161-year-old company, in the 1950s for the warmth of the Italian Riviera. Now, ahead of Bond’s 25th big screen release and Daniel Craig’s last, the British heritage brand is releasing three versions of the shirt in âSpectral Grayâ, âSky Diver Blueâ and (our favorite) âGray Melangeâ.
Worn with discreet shorts on vacation this summer (in the event of a pandemic) or caramel chinos (Ã la Mr Craig) until spring, the one you choose will quickly prove to be the most adaptable item of your wardrobe. warm weather. âThere are so many characters in film and theater that I have dressed up in Sunspel vests, t-shirts and underwear because they are classic, timeless and beautifully crafted,â says Hemming. “[For Casino Royale], I thought it would be a perfect collaboration of quality and britishness to ask Sunspel to create all [Bondâs] T-shirts, polo shirts and underwear, which they did, perfectly. He looks very sexy and happy in their clothes.
How to wear it
Alongside the Casino Royale original in midnight blue, Sunspel has launched three new colors for No time to die. When it comes to rocking a Bond polo shirt this summer, we recommend investing in one of each color and alternating with the same jeans, or chino shorts if the mercury starts to rise. Here are four easy summer outfits with no hassle. Just like 007 would like.
